Alfa Laval launches FCM LNG for LNG-powered ships

Alfa Laval announces the launch of a new fuel supply solution FCM LNG for LNG-powered vessels. The system marks the expansion of Alfa Laval’s portfolio for alternative fuels, integrating cryogenic technology to deliver a holistic and highly reliable fuel supply solution for shipowners adopting LNG. Addressing the evolving market needs for LNG adoption As the maritime industry navigates its decarbonisation journey, LNG has solidified its role as a transitional fuel. It offers a viable path to significant emission reductions now, while the global infrastructure for alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia is still under development. The evolving fuel landscape has created a market demand for reliable and efficient LNG solutions that support marine customers in meeting performance targets, managing CAPEX and OPEX, and complying with regulations. New FCM LNG fuel supply system In response to the strong market trend for LNG, Alfa Laval has launched its new FCM LNG fuel supply system during Marintec 2025. The LNG fuel supply system features advanced cryogenic technology from Fives, a company recently acquired by Alfa Laval. This enables Alfa Laval to deliver a high-performance system that enables customers to adopt LNG efficiently and safely as a marine fuel. Differentiated LNG fuel line solution “For years, Alfa Laval has received customer requests for a differentiated LNG fuel line solution — one that addresses operational challenges and accelerates the shift toward cleaner fuels." "Now, by combining our years of expertise in fuel supply systems and LNG heat transfer with newly acquired cryogenic technology from Fives, we can deliver an advanced system that brings real value to customers. It will meet today’s fuel demands and support tomorrow’s emission targets,” says Peter Sahlen, Head of Marine Separation, Fuel Supply Systems & Heat Transfer, Alfa Laval. The first test benches will be delivered during 2026, with the system ready for marine deliveries in 2027. Delivering reliability, flexibility, and efficiency in LNG fuel supply Building on Alfa Laval’s acquisition of CorHex in 2015 and its 2025 acquisition of Fives Cryogenics, which includes Cryomec ® centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, the company has strengthened its expertise in cryogenic processes and pump technologies. By combining this knowledge with Alfa Laval’s fuel line design competence, the FCM LNG system leverages these advanced technologies to enable high-pressure gas injection in marine diesel engines. Alfa Laval unveils the PureBallast 3 Ultra reactor for ballast water management for the first time at Marintec 2025 in China. The system is already in production, with initial deliveries well underway from the company’s factory in China and has gained strong interest from the market. This growing demand, together with the recent milestone of surpassing 10,000 PureBallast systems ordered globally, underscores Alfa Laval’s enduring commitment and leadership in ballast water management from the very beginning and well into the future. Innovation driven by customer needs The public unveiling of PureBallast 3 Ultra at Marintec, introduces the maritime industry to the compact, innovative core of the next-generation system designed to make ballast water management simpler and easier to achieve. The system reflects years of experience and customer insights, evolving from the thousands of PureBallast installations delivered since the technology was first introduced in partnership with Wallenius Water over two decades ago. With production at Alfa Laval’s factory in Qingdao, China, the regional presence ensures shorter lead times and smoother coordination with shipyards in China and across the Asia-Pacific region. Deliveries started in August 2025, and with a growing orderbook, PureBallast 3 Ultra is rapidly gaining traction in the market. The system’s ultra-compact design significantly reduces the footprint and provides greater flexibility for placement on board. Its optimised system integration and minimised piping requirements streamline the installation process, lowering overall complexity and total installed cost. The system also features an integrated Cleaning-In-Place (CIP) function that reduces both maintenance needs and operational downtime. All PureBallast 3 Ultra systems are connectivity-ready, enabling remote monitoring and more optimised service support throughout the vessel’s lifetime. While shipyards benefit from a system engineered for efficient installation, shipowners benefit from dependable compliance and easier operation. Alfa Laval Korea Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech, marking a significant step toward strengthening cooperation in developing safe and reliable ammonia fuel system solutions for dual-fuel vessels. The partnership reinforces both companies’ commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to low-carbon and alternative fuel technologies. Accelerating adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel The MOU with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech marks a strategic collaboration to leverage Alfa Laval’s deep technical expertise in ammonia fuel systems together with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech’s capabilities in marine technology. The joint approach aims to secure early market opportunities and build competitive advantage in the rapidly-growing field of alternative marine fuels. The partnership includes cooperation on business co-development and project opportunities, with a ambition to deliver a pilot installation to enable future collaboration. Advancing ammonia fuel systems The collaboration is founded on a shared ambition to advance ammonia fuel systems for dual-fuel vessels. Alfa Laval will contribute its proven capabilities in ammonia fuel and mitigation technologies through ammonia fuel supply system and FSS and Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS) and Hanwha will apply its extensive experience in system engineering and integration. This partnership will facilitate the exchange of expertise and improve productivity and safety on board. Innovation through collaboration The partnership with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech represents a strong commitment to enabling ammonia powered shipping through proven technologies, engineering, and close industry collaboration. The signing took place at Alfa Laval’s booth during Kormarine 2025. Alfa Laval is actively engaged in several other key collaborations focused on ammonia as a marine fuel. A key example is our long-standing research and development partnership with WinGD, which has successfully tested the FCM Ammonia, Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS) and Fuel Valve Trains, laying a solid foundation for its commercial rollout. Another collaboration between South Korea’s shipbuilder K Shipbuilding (KSB), Alfa Laval, WinGD, and the classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), saw Alfa Laval contribute to the design of the entire fuel system, including the ammonia fuel supply system, fuel valves train, and ARMS with Alfa Laval also adding an Aalborg ammonia dual-fuel boiler system to the project scope. These initiatives demonstrate Alfa Laval's broad commitment to accelerating the safe adoption of ammonia with own innovations and industry collaborations.
