Ulstein Verft advances Nexans Electra for energy future

On 13 November 2025, the hull of the Nexans Electra cable laying vessel (CLV) was launched from the dock hall at Ulstein Verft, marking a major milestone in the vessel’s journey towards completion.  During its time at Ulstein Verft, the hull has been in a roofed, controlled environment, ensuring optimal conditions for work environment and precision painting. Offshore wind projects and subsea interconnectors The launch of the hull is more than a logistical milestone; it marks a symbolic moment in the construction of a vessel that will play a key role in advancing Nexans’ vision to electrify the future, as a global pioneer in the design and manufacturing of cable systems and services for offshore wind projects and subsea interconnectors.  As the ship transitions from the dock hall to the outfitting quay, it moves closer to becoming a key asset in the global energy transition, poised to lay subsea cables that connect renewable energy sources to the world’s power grids. Installation of critical systems The vessel is nearing the completion of the outfitting phase, which has included the installation of critical systems, such as the main generator sets, power package, deck machinery, and topside equipment. The launch marks the beginning of the finalising phase. The final assembly, installation and paint work will continue, and all systems will be tested and tuned, leading up to sea trials in the spring of 2026. A vessel built for tomorrow’s energy needs The Nexans Electra is designed to meet the growing demand for high-voltage subsea cable installations, essential for offshore wind farms, interconnectors, and deep-sea electrification projects. With capabilities to lay up to four cables simultaneously and a total cable capacity of 13,500 tonnes across three turntables, Electra is engineered for efficiency, precision, and resilience in even the harshest marine environments. The Ulstein Verft yard Ulstein Verft’s advanced facilities and shipbuilding expertise ensure precision, quality, and timely delivery, reinforcing Norway’s long-standing contribution to sustainable maritime innovation. This dock hall allows for high-quality workmanship, resulting in a finish that meets the highest industry standards, critical to the vessel’s long-term durability and performance in demanding offshore environments. Based at the Ulstein Group HQ, most disciplines are within short reach.

DP3 vessel - Nexans Electra begins outfitting at Ulstein Verft

The hull of the state-of-the-art DP3 cable-laying vessel - Nexans Electra arrived at Ulstein Verft on 5 July 2025. This marks the commencement of the outfitting and completion phase of the vessel. Upon completion in 2026, she will feature a split turntable on deck capable of holding up to 10,000 tonnes of cable, an under-deck turntable with a 3,500-tonne cable capacity, and a fibre optic tank with a 450-tonne capacity. Ulstein Verft and Nexans Ulstein Verft will also install the main parts, including the main generator set, power package The shipbuilding contract between Ulstein Verft and Nexans, a pure player in sustainable electrification and a pioneer in subsea cable systems, was signed in 2023.  The hull has been under construction at the Crist yard, Poland. The hull will now be towed into the dock hall at Ulstein Verft, where outfitting, electrical work, insulation, and piping will commence. Ulstein Verft will also install the main components, including the main generator set, power package, deck machinery, winches, and topside equipment. Prepared for the future The Nexans Electra measures 155.2 metres in length and 31 metres in beam. She will be equipped for safe and efficient transport and installation of large volumes of HVDC and HVAC cable systems, as well as complex subsea construction tasks in deep waters. The vessel's built-in structural and system capacities, along with flexible design features, will allow easy adaptation to future customer needs. Large capacity and high capabilities Nexans Electra is based on the Nexans Aurora, which was delivered by Ulstein Verft in 2021 The Nexans Electra, designed by Skipsteknisk, is based on the Nexans Aurora, which was delivered by Ulstein Verft in 2021. She is specifically designed to transport and lay Nexans submarine products, including cable bundles, as well as perform recovery and repair of such products.  The vessel can perform effectively in challenging weather conditions and boasts exceptional manoeuvrability and station-keeping characteristics. The incorporation of high-capacity shore power systems, an energy storage system, and biofuel compatibility ensures a reduced environmental footprint. Based on combined expertise The vessel has been developed through the combined experience of Nexans, Skipsteknisk, the Ulstein Verft yard, and NOV Remacut, each a pioneer in their respective fields. This collaboration has produced a Cable Lay Vessel for worldwide operations, covering the full range of shallow and deep subsea activities.

WINDEA Curie: BSO's modern CSOV from Ulstein Verft

Bernhard Schulte Offshore (BSO) has taken delivery of the state-of-the-art, commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) WINDEA Curie, yard number 320 from Ulstein Verft. Key features include a motion-compensated walk-to-work gangway and elevator tower, a helideck, and a 3D-compensated crane, making her ideal for diverse offshore projects, including wind, offshore oil and gas. This SX222 design has been developed by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS. All four have been designed and delivered by Ulstein. Efficient engines and heat recovery system The vessel offers up to 90 cabins with daylight, providing living conditions for offshore personnel The vessel has an X-STERN at each end for soft movements, increased comfort and reduced fuel consumption. She has highly efficient engines and a heat recovery system to ensure optimal performance and reduced environmental impact, aligning with Schulte Group's commitment to sustainability. The vessel offers up to 90 cabins with daylight, providing comfortable living conditions for offshore personnel. In total, there are 111 cabins, accommodating up to 132 people, with life-saving equipment for all onboard. Advanced DP systems Featuring advanced DP systems and incorporating the TWIN X-STERN technology, the vessel keeps precise positioning and stability in challenging offshore environments. This capability is crucial for maintaining operational excellence and safety. The motion-compensated Ampelmann gangway and 3D motion-compensated Motus crane represent significant upgrades compared to previous BSO vessels. The crane can handle loads of up to 5 tonnes under optimal conditions, enhancing operational efficiency and versatility.
