Svanehoj, an ITT company, is further expanding its expertise in gas solutions with the acquisition of Germany-based Köhler & Hörter GmbH (KOHO Kompressorsysteme, or KOHO), a family-owned company specialising in high-quality compressors for a wide range of industries, including shipbuilding. The acquisition closed on 1 October 2025. In recent years, Svanehoj has expanded its position as a supplier of marine pumps, tank control systems, and related service solutions. The acquisition of KOHO Kompressorsysteme represents the next strategical step for Svanehoj in the gas segment as the global gas tanker market continues to grow. KOHO employs approximately 40 people in Hagen, Germany, and specialises in the design and manufacture of customer-specific reciprocating compressor systems for hydrogen, hydrocarbons, and other demanding gas applications. Their product range also includes gastight bulkhead shaft penetrations for industrial facilities and shipbuilding. High-quality compressors "This is a logical expansion for Svanehoj in the gas tanker segment, where we have delivered cargo pump systems and integrated services to LPG- and LNG carriers for many years. By acquiring KOHO, we can now include high-quality compressors and related spare parts in offerings to our customers. KOHO adds specialist know-how and an attractive product portfolio. First reciprocating compressor KOHO Kompressorsysteme was founded in 1948 by Alfred Köhler and August Hörter, who manufactured their first reciprocating compressor in 1965. Since then, the products and projects have grown in both size and complexity, in line with a continuously increasing demand for specialised compressors across a wide range of applications. The company is run by the third generation of the Hörter family, André Hörter and Björn Hörter, who will both continue as part of the KOHO-management under the new Svanehoj ownership: "We see this change of ownership as a great opportunity to take our company to the next level. Our specialised compressor solutions will now be part of a broader portfolio that supports the future of gas. Continuously increasing demand The acquisition of KOHO Kompressorsysteme is Svanehoj's second this year. In January, Svanehoj completed the acquisition of European Pump Services B.V., now Svanehoj EPS, a Dutch company specialising in the integration and service of pump solutions for the Benelux industrial, offshore, and maritime sectors. Following the acquisition of KOHO, Svanehoj employs 550 people and has activities in Denmark, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Korea, China, Japan, Dubai, and the USA.
With a new compact and versatile ship engine room pump design, Svanehøj aims to optimise onboard liquid handling. Because of its lower weight, fewer components, and just a single wear part, the new NCM pump will enhance efficiency, simplify system integration, and reduce operational complexity. For decades, Svanehøj has designed and manufactured a broad portfolio of engine room pumps for the marine, naval, and offshore sectors, continuing the legacy of the Hamworthy Pumps brand. Now, Svanehøj introduces a new monoblock pump design, the 'NCM Engine Room Pump' series, developed to enhance efficiency in operations onboard ships. Designed with fewer components, it is faster to assemble, disassemble, and maintain. A key innovation lies in its reduced wear parts. With only the mechanical seal subject to wear, the design ensures more consistent performance, fewer disruptions during operations, and a reduced need for spare parts. NCM pump series "With the NCM pump series, we’re introducing the marine market’s lightest, most efficient, and most compact engine room pump. By simplifying our design and product portfolio, we offer a range of engine room pumps with broader duty point spans that are highly competitive in terms of price, durability, and performance," says Morten Christian Larsen, Managing Director at Svanehoj Singapore. A fundamental shift in mindset The new NCM Engine Room Pump is a testament to Svanehøj’s strong tradition of marine pump innovation and its commitment to supporting the industry in powering a better future. The lightweight, compact design and minimal maintenance requirements reduce the pump’s overall environmental footprint while also improving working conditions for the crew onboard. Ship’s efficiency and overall operation "This is much more than just another pump design. It represents a fundamental shift in mindset and a complete relaunch, simplifying and strengthening our entire marine pump program," says Morten Christian Larsen, adding "Engine room pumps are critical to a ship’s efficiency and overall operation, and we firmly believe there is room in the market for a design that is fully optimised across the entire value chain, from manufacturing and installation to operation and maintenance." Once fully implemented, the new NCM Engine Room Pump series will enable Svanehøj to cover the full range of up to 1,500 m³ in capacity and up to 12 bar pressure with just 16 pump variants, significantly reducing complexity in engine room planning.
INEOS, the global pioneering petrochemicals company, has selected ITT’s Svanehøj to supply CO2 pumps for the onshore facility and the first LCO2 carrier for Project Greensand in the Danish North Sea. This strategically significant order further strengthens Svanehøj’s position in carbon capture and storage (CCS), reinforcing its track record as a trusted specialist in critical equipment for liquefied gas. Cargo pumps for the new vessel INEOS has selected Svanehøj as the supplier of CO2 cargo pumps for the new vessel The INEOS-led Project Greensand will become the EU’s first full-scale CO2 storage facility, contributing to climate change mitigation. Following a successful trial, storage operations are set to begin by late 2025 or early 2026. INEOS recently entered a long-term agreement with maritime logistics company Royal Wagenborg to construct and deploy the first dedicated LCO2 carrier for the Greensand project. Now, INEOS has selected Svanehøj as the supplier of CO2 cargo pumps for the new vessel. Svanehøj will also deliver CO2 pumps for the project’s onshore facility in Port Esbjerg. Customised pump solutions "We have worked closely with INEOS' development team over the past year to specify customised pump solutions for both the onshore terminal and the vessel." "It has been a rewarding process, allowing us to leverage our extensive expertise in CO2 and contribute to an optimised design regarding flow and pressure," said Magnus Madsen, Sales Manager, Cargo Gas, at Svanehøj. Decades of experience in CO2 pumps Svanehøj delivered its first cargo pump solution for an LCO2 carrier in the 1990s. Being one of the few marine pump manufacturers with experience in CO2 pumping systems, the company has identified CCS among its future key growth segments. Notably in 2024, Svanehøj was awarded a contract to supply CO2 pumps for the world's largest LCO2 carriers, currently under construction at HD Hyundai Mipo. Svanehøj is also the supplier of CO2 pumping systems for the Northern Lights LCO2 fleet in Norway. The new order from INEOS and Project Greensand further strengthens Svanehøj’s position as a market leader in the CCS segment. 400,000 tonnes of CO2 a year from 2026 Project Greensand is named after the type of sandstone beneath the seabed in the Danish North Sea Project Greensand is named after the type of sandstone beneath the seabed in the Danish North Sea. By initiating the first commercial phase, Project Greensand establishes the full-value chain as captured and liquefied CO2 from Danish biogas producers is transported offshore for injection into depleted oil wells in the North Sea’s Nini Field for permanent storage. The first purpose-built LCO2 carrier for Project Greensand will be based on the EasyMax concept, developed by Royal Wagenborg and Royal Niestern Sander shipyard. Operation by the end of 2025 It is an open-top multi-purpose ice-classed vessel design, combining a large load capacity and low fuel consumption. The vessel is expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2025. In this phase of the project, INEOS aims to store 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year with an outlook to scale the capacity to 8 million tonnes a year as volumes of captured CO2 for storage increase.
