Accelleron will launch a landmark Net Zero report at London International Shipping Week (LISW) this month, calling on shipping to join forces with other industries and pool demand for carbon-neutral fuels. The call to decarbonise shipping has sparked a technological renaissance in the past decade that has enabled vessels to slash emissions in a variety of ways and be powered by carbon-neutral fuels. But the production of such fuels at scale and at affordable prices has yet to materialise. Accelleron’s report combines proprietary modelling with extensive insights from peers across the shipping value chain to determine the current stalemate and map a comprehensive way out: Pool demand for hydrogen-based fuels with other hard-to-abate sectors, such as aviation, steel, power and agriculture to trigger scaleable investment in production and infrastructure. Success hinges on implementing energy-saving technologies and going viral with fuel efficiency. But that’s just the first step in decarbonisation,” said Daniel Bischofberger, Chief Executive Officer at Accelleron. ClassNK has issued an approval in principle (AiP) for the design concept of a retrofitted Kamsarmax bulk carrier, converting it from conventional fuel to methanol dual-fuel, jointly developed by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Fonden Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping. This certification demonstrates the regulatory feasibility of the ship, serving as a meaningful step in advancing the transition of the existing fleet to alternative fuels, as bulk carriers of this size are widely operated now. New methanol fuel tanks The design concept was set as part of a project exploring the conversion of Tsuneishi’s Kamsarmax The design concept was developed as part of a project exploring the conversion of Tsuneishi’s Kamsarmax bulk carrier standard design to a methanol dual fuel configuration. Aiming to establish a model that could pave the way for a broader green transition within the medium-sized bulk carrier sector, the project is working through retrofit challenges, such as determining the location of the new methanol fuel tanks. Fuel supply systems ClassNK carried out a design review of the design concept based on ‘Part A Guidelines for Ships Using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuels (Edition 3.0.0)’ of the ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels’ and examined the risk assessment through HAZID. ClassNK issued AiP upon confirming the feasibility of key design, including the arrangement of methanol fuel tanks and fuel supply systems, in terms of regulatory compliance. ClassNK will continually strive to contribute to advanced decarbonisation initiatives through safety assessments and more.
Foreship has recruited Jonny Berglund as its Business Development Director, in a new role to focus the Helsinki-based group’s efforts in growing its presence in commercial shipping. With a career-long commitment to maritime, including seagoing experience as an officer, Berglund has a formidable sales and business development record in technical areas which include ship energy, propulsion systems and performance monitoring. He has held senior roles at one of the world’s largest marine engine builders, at a supplier of technical products to commercial ships, and elsewhere. Business development record Berglund joins Foreship after a targeted recruiting process to grow its high value commercial design and project management work, with a focus on container ships, LNG carriers and offshore support vessels. He will concentrate on opportunities to exploit Foreship’s expertise and experience in environmental compliance, sustainability and ship decarbonisation. “This is a significant group appointment which aligns with strategic plans for Foreship to expand services in new and emerging markets,” said Lauri Haavisto, CEO, Foreship Group Ltd. “Jonny will work closely with the leadership team to open new territories and develop services, to drive and guide growth.” Offshore support vessels Berglund will also be at liberty to develop opportunities elsewhere in Europe With an initial target to grow Foreship’s commercial ship presence in Northern Europe, Berglund will also be at liberty to develop opportunities elsewhere in Europe and in key maritime hubs in Asia. “Being tasked with expanding Foreship’s activities outside its market-leading position in the cruise industry is an exciting prospect,” said Berglund. “There is a huge opportunity for commercial owners to benefit from what Foreship is doing to assist cruise and ferry ships now to manage energy spend, reduce emissions and make progress on decarbonisation.” Managing energy spend Berglund’s efforts will leverage the ties Foreship has already established with commercial owners based on innovative design. Last year, for example, the company completed the concept design for Seaspan Corporation’s ground-breaking ammonia-fuelled 15,000 TEU container ship, working with Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. UK-based Berglund will also add to the expertise and business connections based in Foreship’s growing office in Southampton. “We welcome Jonny to the Southampton operation and look forward to offering him every support as he builds new opportunities, working alongside Foreship’s existing sales channels,” said Shaun White, Managing Director Foreship UK Ltd.
