DNV has awarded Jiangnan Shipyard an Approval in Principle (AiP) for its Jiangnan Intelligent System JNIS (DATA) under the D-INF(S) class notation. Jiangnan received the recognition for their standardised onboard data platform which is aligned with ISO 19847 and ISO 19848. The accelerating digital transformation of the maritime industry depends on trusted, high-quality data collected systematically from sensors, control systems, and other onboard sources. But as vessels generate increasingly large and complex datasets, the reliability and consistency of this data is critical. To unlock the benefits of digitalisation, shipping needs standardised data infrastructures that ensure secure collection, storage, and exchange, and which are aligned with international requirements. Range of current and future digital applications The JNIS (DATA) platform from Jiangnan Shipyard is designed to integrate data from diverse equipment manufacturers, break down information silos, and support a wide range of current and future digital applications. As part of the D-INF AiP, DNV has worked with Jiangnan Shipyard to validate their standardised ship–shore data model, establish a unified and structured database, and advance Jiangnan’s digital foundation for intelligent ship construction.  Further development in MASS systems and vessels Lin Qingshan, Jiangnan’s Vice President, said: “Receiving DNV’s D-INF(S) AiP is a major milestone in our digital transformation. The architecture is designed to be expandable to cover additional services and uses, including remote inspection and data-driven verification (DDV). The D-INF notation verifies that the data collection infrastructure systems can collect data from a range of different systems and supports input and output according to a standardised ISO 19847/19848 format to support cost-effective, scalable, reliable and secure data collection, storage, and exchange of data. The rules set out requirements for a data collection infrastructure to facilitate vessel-to-shore data exchange. An Approval in Principle (AiP) is an independent evaluation of a concept based on a predefined framework of requirements. It confirms the feasibility of the design and ensures there are no significant technical obstacles hindering its implementation.

The Vice President of Jiangnan Shipyard Group, the largest Chinese shipyard specialised in gas carrier construction, Lin Qingshan, arrives at Navalshore 2025 with the goal of seeking partnerships and expanding its presence in the Brazilian market. The group, participating for the first time in Latin America's largest maritime fair, scheduled for August 19-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has already initiated contacts for the second tender of Petrobras' fleet renewal program. The process involves the purchase of eight vessels: five pressurised and three semi-refrigerated, with capacities of 7,000 and 14,000 cubic meters, intended for the transportation of LPG and ammonia. Naval and offshore sectors This growth accompanies a new cycle of investments in the Brazilian shipbuilding industry Navalshore reaches its 19th edition in 2025, with an expanded exhibition area of 6,000 to 10,000 square meters. The number of exhibitors has grown from 110 to 144 confirmed companies, representing over 400 national and international brands in the naval and offshore sectors. This growth accompanies a new cycle of investments in the Brazilian shipbuilding industry, which recorded over R$ 30 billion in investments in 2024—the largest volume in more than a decade, according to data from the Merchant Marine Fund. Fostering business opportunities In this context, Navalshore 2025 is expected to drive business estimated at over R$ 12 billion, considering signed contracts, commercial partnerships, and connections between suppliers, shipowners, shipyards, and institutions in the sector. Organisers expect to exceed the number of visitors by 30% compared to 2024, attracting around 15,000 professionals from the maritime and offshore sectors, including engineers, decision-makers, technicians, and institutional representatives from Brazil, Latin America, and strategic markets such as Europe and Asia. Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems for five new Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) vessels. The order has been placed by Jiangnan Shipyard, and the ships are being built for Chinese owners. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q3, 2024. Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply The order follows a similar order for Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems placed by the yard in 2023 for four VLECs. The new 99,000 m3 capacity VLECs are mainly designed to transport ethane and will use ethane as fuel. As part of the Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems scope, Wärtsilä will also provide basic and detailed engineering services, along with supervision and commissioning at the yard.
