Nissen Kaiun invests in Econowind's wind propulsion

Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun has become a shareholder in Dutch Wind-Assisted Shipping Propulsion pioneer Econowind. This move highlights growing industry interest in fuel-neutral technologies. The Imabari-based shipping company, which operates a diversified fleet through several subsidiaries, said it had chosen Econowind for its technology. Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion solution “We recognised that Econowind has a mature Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion solution in the market,” a spokesperson for Nissen Kaiun said. “As one of the market leaders Econowind delivers proven technology. Making shipping more sustainable is a top priority at Nissen Kaiun. We are currently looking into installing the large version of their innovative VentoFoils on our vessels.” “It is well suited to maritime conditions while being easy for the crew to use. Econowind's VentoFoil boost for Terntank's hybrid fleet

Econowind has received a repeat order from Terntank for the installation of eight VentoFoil units on two additional methanol-ready hybrid tankers. Following the initial order in May 2023 for three newbuilds, this brings the total to five vessels and 20 VentoFoils, with each ship fitted with four 16-meter wind wings. IMO 2050 targets The vessels are designed for zero-emission operations and fully aligned with the IMO 2050 targets The first vessel, Tern Vik, was delivered in April 2025 by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou). The entire series is equipped with Kongsberg’s advanced energy and propulsion management system. Under the K-Sail concept, wind can take the lead when conditions are favourable. Combined with battery packs and dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol or diesel, the vessels are designed for zero-emission operations and fully aligned with the IMO 2050 targets. Installation of the VentoFoils Terntank operates in the Nordic region and focuses on the transport of sustainable fuels. Its newbuilds are among the most environmentally advanced in the market. Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion is a key element of the design. The VentoFoils are lightweight, foldable for safe and efficient port operations, and fully ATEX-certified to meet tanker safety requirements. “At Terntank, we are always looking for ways to reduce fuel consumption. It’s part of our DNA,” said Claes Möller, CEO of Terntank. “The installation of the VentoFoils and their integration with the Kongsberg system went seamlessly. It’s great to see that the actual fuel savings match what was predicted. Econowind’s engineering team has worked closely with Terntank and Kongsberg to ensure seamless integration of the VentoFoils into the vessel’s overall energy system. The collaborative approach allows real-time optimisation of power sources, where wind, batteries, and fuel-based engines work together to minimise emissions and maximise efficiency. These are being deployed across a wide range of vessel types, including dry bulk carriers, tankers, ro-ro and container ships, reflecting growing momentum for Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion across the industry.

Econowind secures funding for wind-powered shipping

Dutch company Econowind, based in Zeewolde, has secured €1 million in development capital from Invest International to advance and test its VentoFoil XL, a 24-30 metre high steel wind sail inspired by aviation technology. Similar to aeroplane wings, these innovative sails are designed for large vessels, harnessing wind power to reduce fuel consumption and cut CO2 emissions by up to 15%.  Introduction of the XL model The first of two XL prototypes is expected to be fully developed and tested within the next two years Econowind has been producing smaller VentoFoils for coastal shipping for several years. With the introduction of the XL model, the company aims to expand into the deep-sea shipping market, strengthening its position as a pioneer in sustainable maritime technology.  The first of two XL prototypes is expected to be fully developed and tested within the next two years. In addition to development capital, Invest International has also provided export financing to support Econowind’s growth. Proven success & market potential Econowind has already manufactured 10- and 16-metre VentoFoils for coastal vessels. Now, the larger 24-30 metre XL sails will enter the market, targeting deep-sea shipping, which includes 50,000 vessels worldwide. These ships spend extended periods at sea, consuming significant amounts of fuel. The larger sails will deliver greater fuel savings and further reduce environmental impact. Designed and manufactured in Zeewolde, the VentoFoil XL will soon be deployed on ships around the world, contributing to greener maritime transport. Prototype development & testing Econowind is already engaged in discussions with potential customers The newly secured funding will support the design, development, and construction of two VentoFoil XL prototypes. These will undergo extensive testing on both land and sea to evaluate performance and safety, forming the basis for regulatory approval. While the project is set for completion in summer 2027, Econowind is already engaged in discussions with potential customers. Development capital is often unavailable through traditional financing, but we can provide the necessary support to help bring this product to market.” CO2 emissions in deep-sea shipping Econowind CEO & Founder, Frank Nieuwenhuis, highlighted the company's expansion into the deep-sea sector: “With this investment, we can accelerate our focus on the deep-sea market. The market demand is high, and the potential is enormous. Wind propulsion is bringing shipping back to its roots.” Development of wind-powered solutions For this financial transaction, Invest International collaborated with Regional Development Companies (ROMs), specifically the Development Company for Northern Netherlands (NOM) and Horizon Flevoland, which provided an additional €2 million in equity to Econowind. This financing aligns with Invest International's mission to decarbonise the maritime sector. Currently, over 90% of global trade relies on shipping, which accounts for 2.5% of worldwide CO2 emissions. The development of wind-powered solutions like the VentoFoil XL represents a crucial step toward a more sustainable shipping industry.
