Sperry Marine, a global major in navigation solutions for seagoing vessels, has been selected to supply the complete Integrated Bridge Systems for two highly innovative container vessels under construction for Samskip. Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, the groundbreaking vessels will be delivered, achieving zero-emission propulsion and ready for future autonomous navigation. Green corridor initiative The two ships combined are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 25,000 tons annually The 135-metre length vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2027 to operate between Oslo Fjord and Samskip’s home port of Rotterdam, as part of a pioneering green corridor initiative. The two ships combined are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 25,000 tons annually, when operating in zero-emission mode using green hydrogen. Integrate emerging autonomous navigation solutions At owner’s request, each IBS will feature open architecture that makes it possible to integrate emerging autonomous navigation solutions. Now, no industry-wide standards exist covering autonomous ship navigation. However, Sperry Marine’s modular design and open interfaces will allow shipowners to innovate at their own pace. The IBS package on board will include Sperry Marine’s new ‘self-adaptive’ NAVIPILOT 4500N autopilot, which dynamically adjusts to vessel characteristics and changing conditions, resulting in measurable fuel savings and reduced bridge workload. Samskip’s level of ambition “Samskip’s level of ambition on emissions requires partners like Sperry Marine, with similar objectives for innovation and the willingness to invest in the future,” said Jeroen Hollebrands, Head of Newbuilding and Projects, Samskip Group. Jeroen Hollebrands adds, “These ships are a milestone for the maritime industry, delivering hydrogen fuel cells and autonomous-ready navigation as a clean and renewable technology.” Sperry Marine’s resilient sensor technology “What sets this IBS apart is its open and flexible architecture, combined with Sperry Marine’s resilient sensor technology and robust cyber protection. This creates a secure and future-proof navigation platform, ready for today’s hydrogen-powered operation and tomorrow’s autonomous services,” said Pascal Göllnitz, Sperry Marine’s Product Line Manager for Integrated Bridge Systems. Sperry Marine’s Advanced ARPA tracking Also on board will be Sperry Marine’s Advanced ARPA tracking, whose streams operate separately from radar video, meaning performance is unaffected by anti-clutter settings. As well as consistently reliable target tracking, even in difficult conditions, the system provides tracking ranges of 40NM to ensure early awareness among bridge teams. The full scope of supply includes Sperry Marine’s Secure Maritime Gateway cyber threat protection, and remote diagnostics and support. Innovators in ship safety, efficiency, and sustainability “Sperry Marine is proud to collaborate with Samskip and Cochin Shipyard Limited on this transformative project,” said Guy Millard, Managing Director of Sperry Marine, adding “This contract demonstrates how our navigation technologies are sought out by the maritime industry’s true innovators in ship safety, efficiency, and sustainability.”
Keel Laying of the Seventh Anti-Submarine Warfare ship (ASW SWC) (BY 529, INS Machilipatnam) of the project being built for the Indian Navy was held at Cochin Shipyard Limited by Rear Admiral Upal Kundu, VSM, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command on 29 Jan 2025. Shri Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director, CSL, Director (Technical) and Director (Operations) of CSL, Executive Directors of CSL, General Manager (Ship Building), Warship Production Superintendent, Kochi, Senior officials of Indian Navy & CSL, representatives from the Classification society (DNV), officers, supervisors and workmen of CSL were present for the ceremony. High-end technology-intensive warships Contract for building eight (8) ASW SWC ships was signed between Ministry of Defense (MoD) and Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), on 30 April 2019. The Mahe Class of Ships will replace the in-service Abhay class ASW Corvettes of the Indian Navy and are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and Mine Laying Operations, including subsurface surveillance. These vessels are capable of a maximum speed of 25 knots and an endurance of 1800 nautical miles. The vessels are fitted with indigenously developed, state-of-the-art SONARS, for underwater surveillance. This is a fine example of Indian capability and prowess to manufacture high-end technology-intensive warships with high indigenous content under 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), a pioneering international classification society, is proud of its growing role in advancing India's defence capabilities through its participation in major new construction projects for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, thereby taking a major step forward in realising a self-reliant defence manufacturing capability, as envisioned under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Major new construction vessels Recently, ‘steel-cutting’ took place for several major new construction vessels, as mentioned below, all of which are being classified by the Indian Register of Shipping. The vessels include: Second ‘Fleet Support Ship’ at L&T Shipbuilding First ‘Next Generation Missile Vessel’ at Cochin Shipyard Ltd Second ‘Next Generation Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel’ and first Coast Guard ‘Fast Patrol Vessels’ at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. Keel laying of the Third Cadet Training Ship at L&T Modern Naval and Coast Guard platforms The concurrent commencement of production of these modern Naval and Coast Guard platforms, including the complex Next Generation Missile Vessels and Fleet Support Ships, spread across multiple shipyards, presents a unique challenge, which will test IRS’ technical capabilities and capacity to the fullest. Commenting on the occasion, Cdr. K K Dhawan (Retd), Head Defence, IRS, said: "This milestone signifies India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence manufacturing and IRS is honoured to play a pivotal role in ensuring these vessels meet the highest standards of safety and performance. IRS will take all required steps to ensure timely delivery of classification services and adherence to quality benchmarks."
