New era in safety training ABS is advancing a new era in safety training with global safety training centres located in Athens Wiernicki added: “The solution calculus for owners in today’s operating environment is 70% fuel, 15% energy efficiency and 15% performance optimisation. Alongside that they need to bear in mind the critical role of well-trained people in not only the new equation for success but also safety performance.” Wiernicki shared how ABS is advancing a new era in safety training with global safety training centres located in Athens, Singapore and Doha. He outlined how the ABS fleet has grown to 305 million gross tons and has secured the number one position in the global orderbook share. ABS’ safety performance in port state control has consistently ranked number one on a global composite basis since 2017. Sustainability and regulatory topics ABS executives provided updates on sustainability and regulatory topics with a focus on the cost of regulatory compliance and the impact of fleet pooling under FuelEU. The committee was also briefed on major market trends, including the emissions reduction, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, digital twins and data analytics. ABS is bringing these areas together to drive predictive compliance and maintenance and improve safety, reliability, performance and commercial outcomes. Development of key technologies Committee members heard from special guest, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Themis Sapsis, Koch Professor of Marine Technology, MIT Centre for Ocean Engineering. He delivered in depth analysis of the maritime decarbonisation landscape as well as development of key technologies such as nuclear energy, autonomy, cybersecurity, hydrodynamics and advanced manufacturing. The meeting also saw the presentation of an ABS Distinguished Service Award to Peter Livanos, Chairman of GasLog Ltd., in appreciation and recognition of his 21 years of service as the ABS Hellenic National Committee Chairman. Classification society DNV presented Arcadia Shipmanagement Co Ltd. with a certificate recognising their vessel Aegean Myth as the first vessel globally to have a SEEMP III manual. The Ship Operational Carbon Intensity Plan or SEEMP Part III, is part of IMO’s strategy to reduce shipping’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a verified SEEMP Part III must be kept on board from 1 January 2023. The SEEMP Part III, or Ship Operational Carbon Intensity Plan, was finalised with the latest amendments to MARPOL Annex VI and the associated Guidelines at MEPC 78 last month. It requires ship owners and operators to monitor, report, and verify CO2 emissions annually for all vessels larger than 5,000 GT. Corrective action plan It is a ship-specific document, a dynamic and regularly updated three-year implementation plan describing how a vessel will achieve the required Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) over the next three years, with yearly targets, procedures for self-evaluation and improvement, and a corrective action plan in case of an inferior rating. “We are very proud to be the first shipping company to have received approval by the world’s leading classification society, DNV, for our fleet’s SEEMP Part III, starting with our Aegean Myth vessel,” said Mr. Dimitrios Mattheou, CEO of Arcadia Shipmanagement Co Ltd. The CII will require more of the shipping industry in terms of data collection and sharing. At DNV, we have invested in developing our competence and services for this new regime, including developing a set of digital solutions that will make compliance as simple and transparent as possible for our customers,” he added. DNV recently released the free SEEMP III Generator tool for DNV customers. The system can propose energy efficiency measures and help vessel operators reach the required CII. It can also help to reduce paperwork and can be used by both ship managers and third-party consultants working on behalf of DNV DCS customers.
