The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) recently renewed its Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification from the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), a distinguished environmental standard within the European port industry.
As the first European port to achieve this certification back in 2003, Valenciaport has consistently renewed it eight times, underscoring the port's dedication to environmental management and the collaborative efforts of the community in pursuing a sustainable future.
Commitment to zero emissions
Effort is aligned with the 2035 Strategic Plan, which prioritises promoting sustainable growth
Mar Chao López, President of the APV, remarked on the significance of this achievement, stating that it "endorses the path we are taking towards Valenciaport’s zero emissions target, reconciling the reduction of environmental impact with commercial and technological growth."

Ongoing environmental improvements
PERS certification serves as a testament to transparency and ongoing enhancement in environmental management at Valenciaport.
Compliance is rigorously evaluated by Lloyd's Register, an international entity specialising in maritime engineering and technology. The certification is valid for two years, mandating a review to ensure continued adherence to required standards.
Valenciaport plays an active role in EcoPorts, a prominent environmental network uniting over 100 ports from 25 countries, all dedicated to sustainability and environmental cooperation.

The APV operates under the guiding principle of aligning growth with sustainability. Through its Ecoport programme, a number of port community businesses have adopted unified environmental objectives.
These include implementing energy and environmental management systems, carbon footprint calculations, and transparent result communications to the public.
The port is registered with the European Union’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and maintains an ISO 50001 certified energy management system. Additionally, it was the first Spanish Port Authority to register a port facility's carbon footprint with the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
2035 Strategic vision
The 2035 Strategic Plan, introduced this year, strengthens the port's sustainable and digital approach.
Its objectives include managing 45% of Spain's import and export container traffic, generating 80,000 jobs both directly and indirectly, and establishing Valenciaport as a leader in innovation and energy transition within the Mediterranean region.
