In a notable development for the renewable energy sector in the Asia-Pacific region, U-Ming Marine Offshore (UMO), a subsidiary of the Far Eastern Group, alongside Purus, a globally recognised company in offshore energy maritime services based in Singapore, have announced the formation of a new joint venture.
The venture, named UPO Holdings Co., Ltd. (UPO), aims to expand offshore wind operations in Taiwan and the wider region. This collaboration will be officially introduced at Wind Energy Taiwan 2025, highlighting a new era of international maritime partnership and innovation.

UPO is set to commission two advanced VARD 419 Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs), each 88 metres in length, meticulously designed for the distinctive and challenging conditions prevalent in Taiwan. These vessels signify a leap forward in offshore wind service capabilities, offering enhanced safety and operational standards.
Key features include the Seaonics All-Electric Walk-to-Work (W2W) 3D gangways, ensuring efficient and safe personnel transfers, and advanced DP2 dynamic positioning systems for precise station-keeping amidst Taiwan's turbulent wind and sea conditions.
Vessels’ hybrid propulsion systems boost fuel efficiency
Additionally, the vessels’ hybrid propulsion systems aim to minimise emissions and boost fuel efficiency, accommodating up to 120 personnel including 93 technicians for extended missions.
Comfort is a priority, with “ClimateMax” air conditioning for optimal humidity control in tropical climates, alongside sophisticated systems for real-time operational monitoring. Scheduled for delivery starting in 2027, these vessels will position UPO as a leader in sustainable offshore service innovation across the Asia-Pacific region.
