Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has received approval in principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its innovative wireless fire and gas detection system.
This ground-breaking system is designed to enhance safety in maritime operations by using a ship's metal structure for signal transmission, rather than relying on traditional power cables.
Advancements in safety technology
Traditional fire and gas detection systems typically transmit signals via power cables to a central control panel. SHI's new design utilises the vessel's metal framework as a low-voltage power transmission medium, converting signals from fire detection and alarm devices into magnetic waves.
These waves are then wirelessly transmitted using the metal surface of the ship, improving the efficiency and reliability of safety signals.

According to Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, the design not only minimises the need for extensive cabling, but also provides greater flexibility and scalability within these critical systems.

ABS has conducted thorough technical reviews in line with the goal-based standards framework detailed in the ABS Rules for Alternative Arrangements, Novel Concepts, and New Technologies.
