Scania has introduced its latest advancement in marine engine technology, launching the Next Generation 13-litre marine engine at the International Workboat Show in North America.
Known for manufacturing marine, industrial, and power generation engines, Scania's newly unveiled engine promises enhanced performance and reliability.
The Next Generation 13-litre engine is designed to offer up to 30% more power while reducing fuel consumption by up to 8%. This improvement could lead to savings of approximately 6.7 litres (about 1.7 gallons) of diesel per hour during full load operations. The engine range, depending on various factors such as emissions requirements and duty ratings, starts at 350 HP and extends up to 1,050 HP, providing the widest power range in the current 13-litre class.
Sustainable transport system
Jorg Franzke, President of Scania USA, highlighted the company's commitment, stating, "Scania’s purpose is to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system creating a world of mobility that is better for business, society and the environment."
He emphasised that the Next Generation engine marks a significant advancement, with improvements across all core systems contributing to superior efficiency and performance.
Operators using Scania products are already familiar with the company's standards of reliability and durability. The new engine aims to enhance these standards further, offering improved operation for marine interfaces.

The 13-litre engine features a newly designed engine block and a mono-block cylinder head, among other components like a new rotating assembly.
These include a crankshaft, pistons, and dual overhead cams, created with a focus on reliability. Additionally, the internal lubrication and cooling systems have been redesigned to minimize friction, enhancing overall engine performance.
Scania is also introducing an updated engine management system, the Scania EMS S10, with new software for enhanced performance, ensuring the engine is prepared for future integration with electronic systems.
Sustainability as a core value
Sustainability is integral to Scania’s mission. The new engine is manufactured in Södertälje, Sweden, where Scania's facilities are powered entirely by renewable energy. In alignment with its sustainable objectives, Scania collaborates with suppliers who have robust decarbonisation plans.
The engine will see a CO2 reduction of up to 7% when compared to the current platform and is compatible with alternative fuels, including 100% HVO and up to 20% Biodiesel, aligning performance with environmental responsibility.
The Next Generation 13-litre engine will be showcased at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans, held on December 3-5, 2025, at booth #3701. The engine is anticipated to be available in the North American market by late 2026.

This is Scania’s most advanced marine engine, with increased performance and improved reliability.
The Next Generation 13-liter marine engine can deliver up to 30% more power and up to 8% lower fuel consumption. That translates to potential savings of up to 6.7 liters (~1.7 gal) of diesel per hour at full load operation.
This offering will start at 350 HP and go up to 1,050 HP depending on emissions requirements, application, duty ratings, and rated speed. This is the largest power range from a single engine platform in the current 13-liter class. This would also make the Next Generation 13-liter the top contender for best-in-class power-to-weight ratio compared to similar 13-liters on the market.

A newly designed engine block, mono-block cylinder head, and rotating assembly (including crankshaft, pistons, and dual overhead cams) all make contributions to an engine that is built from the ground up with reliability in mind. Internal lubrication and cooling systems have been redesigned to reduce internal friction and provide better performance.
The Next Generation 13-liter engine will have an updated engine management system called the Scania EMS S10. This will provide new engine software that will deliver better performance and be E-machine ready in the future.
Sustainability as a core value
Sustainability is a core value to Scania. The Next Generation 13-liter engine is produced in Södertälje, Sweden where the Scania factory operates on 100% renewable energy.
Scania has prioritised suppliers that are also strong in sustainability as many have decarbonisation strategies and targets in place. The Next Generation 13-liter engine will also see up to a 7% reduction in CO2 compared to the current platform and is alternative fuel(s) ready. It is compatible with 100% HVO and up to 20% Biodiesel delivering sustainability without sacrificing performance.
The Next Generation 13-liter engine will be on display at the International Workboat Show, booth #3701, held in New Orleans, December 3-5, 2025. The engine is scheduled to be available late 2026 for the North American market.
