The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) has announced the introduction of the updated RMI Yacht Code 2026, effective 1 January 2026. This revision of the previously amended 2021 Code addresses the growing complexity in superyacht designs, construction techniques, and operational practices.
The Code aims to serve as a foundational framework for safety and compliance in the industry, especially relating to new build projects and shipyards. It has been revised to incorporate the latest guidelines from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and has been shaped by recent experiences and best practices.

The development of the revised Code began in September 2024 with inputs from the Regulatory and Yacht Fleet Operations Teams of International Registries, Inc. (IRI) and its affiliates.

Industry insights and feedback
Marc Verburg, Director of Yacht Operations at IRI’s Roosendaal office, emphasised the need for the regulatory framework to be adaptable and pragmatic to match the rapid evolution of the yacht industry. According to Verburg, the Code was reviewed in detail to align with industry needs.
Patrick Bachofner, Director of the Geneva Office and Worldwide Director, Yachts, stated that the revised Code builds on both recent and long-standing maritime practices, maintaining high standards for vessel operation while allowing for alternative solutions.

Anticipating future needs
The RMI Yacht Code has evolved from its 2013 version to the revised 2021 edition, with further amendments approved in 2023. The October 2025 release of the 2026 Code gives stakeholders adequate time to understand and adapt to the changes ahead of its implementation.
This proactive strategy reflects the RMI’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards and providing a reliable framework for the industry to follow as it navigates future advancements.
