Korean Register (KR) has unveiled two innovative digital platforms, PILOT and POWER, to aid the maritime industry in crafting effective carbon-reduction strategies and improving operational performance.
With the European Union's greenhouse gas regulations, EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime, already implemented, the delayed adoption of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Net-Zero Framework has created uncertainties about global regulatory directions.
Introduction of KR’s platforms
KR has introduced these platforms to support strategic, data-driven decision-making
In response to the evolving regulatory landscape, shipping companies are in search of solutions to assess emission-reduction strategies using objective data while weighing both cost and regulatory implications.
KR has introduced these platforms to support strategic, data-driven decision-making for sustainable fleet operations.
Capabilities of PILOT
PILOT empowers users to develop and evaluate tailored greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction scenarios taking into account each vessel’s technical specifications and operational data.
It calculates vessel-specific emissions and compliance costs using real-world emission data submitted to the IMO and the EU.
Furthermore, it examines the cost-effectiveness and potential reductions achievable through the adoption of energy-saving devices (ESDs) and alternative fuels, recommending the most viable strategies. The platform also aids in devising mid- to long-term plans by simulating prospective regulatory changes.
Insights from POWER
POWER enhances understanding of ship performance and fuel efficiency
POWER enhances understanding of ship performance and fuel efficiency by analysing Automatic Identification System (AIS) data alongside weather and ocean condition information.
This provides ship operators with comprehensive insights into their vessels’ operational status, helping identify areas for improvement and enabling the crafting of data-driven voyage strategies.
KR’s vision for the future
LEE Hyungchul, Chairman & CEO of KR, stated, "The shipping industry is facing the dual challenge of establishing practical emission-reduction strategies while improving operational efficiency under a changing regulatory environment."
He added, "PILOT and POWER embody KR's accumulated expertise and data-driven analytical capabilities, providing shipowners intelligence that enables informed decisions and promotes the sustainable development of the maritime sector."
Both KR-PILOT and KR-POWER are integrated within KR’s digital service platform, KR-DAON, where they are readily accessible to shipping companies aiming to navigate the complex regulatory and operational landscape effectively.
