Kongsberg Maritime celebrates a significant milestone, observing 50 years since the launch of its pioneering Dynamic Positioning (DP) system. This Norwegian innovation has revolutionised offshore operations, setting new benchmarks for safety and efficiency at sea.
The historical journey began in the mid-1970s when the challenging conditions of the North Sea called for safer alternatives to traditional anchoring methods. In 1977, the successful live test of the first Norwegian DP system on Stolt-Nielsen's Seaway Eagle marked a pivotal moment, enabling vessels to maintain position without anchors by leveraging sensors and thrusters to manage wind, waves, and currents in real-time.
New era of offshore operations
Vegard Sæterlid, Head of Positioning and Manoeuvring at Kongsberg Maritime, reflects on this transformation: "If it hadn’t been for DP, there would have been no oil adventure."

Over the decades, Kongsberg Maritime has sustained its role at the forefront of DP innovation

DP began with a few customers and became the most important technology for starting the oil adventure. Over the decades, Kongsberg Maritime has sustained its role at the forefront of DP innovation. Its systems, numbering over 4,000, are internationally deployed across various vessels, including offshore ships, semi-submersible platforms, wind-farm service vessels, and aquaculture vessels.
The modern K-Pos system integrates advanced sensor data and power management with user-friendly interfaces, allowing operators to efficiently maintain position while minimising fuel usage and emissions.
