Following a decision made during a board meeting on 11 November, John McDonald has been appointed as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ABS.
This announcement marks the completion of a thorough succession strategy, with McDonald taking the helm starting 1 January 2026.
He will replace the current Chairman and CEO, Christopher J. Wiernicki, who will be retiring.
Leadership transition at ABS
Currently serving as the President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS, McDonald expressed his honour in leading the organisation.

He further emphasised his eagerness to continue the growth and innovation that have been the hallmark of ABS, supported by a dedicated team of professionals worldwide.
John McDonald's career journey
McDonald began his tenure at ABS in 1996, initially working as a surveyor. Over the years, he has held various key positions, including leading ABS Divisions in Europe and the Pacific and serving as the Senior Vice President of the Western Hemisphere Survey Operations and the Senior Vice President of Global Business Development. His extensive experience culminated in his roles as Chief Operating Officer and President.
Educational background
McDonald's educational credentials include a bachelor's degree in marine engineering from the Maine Maritime Academy and an MBA from Texas A&M University. His background and experience position him well for his new role in guiding ABS into the future.
