This new series of vessels, each weighing 11,000 DWT, signifies a continued partnership between Ferus Smit and Arklow Shipping. The battery systems on these ships will facilitate several functions, including grid stabilisation during voyages. Additional functions include optimising loading and unloading operations, particularly when using the vessel’s electric excavator.

The Octopus Lite Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will also power the bow thruster and enable zero-emission stays in port, thereby boosting operational efficiency and cutting down on CO2 and other emissions during the ships' operation.

Patrick Kuiper, a Mechanical Designer at Ferus Smit Shipyard, stated, "We selected EST-Floattech as our partner, because of their proven battery performance and excellent service on previous vessel series."

He also highlighted the modularity of their battery system, which allows capacity upgrades over time, providing shipowners with flexibility and ensuring their vessels remain adaptable for future needs.

Modern electric propulsion solutions

The first vessel delivery is anticipated in 2026, with the last set for completion in 2029. Walter van der Pennen, Chief Commercial Officer at EST-Floattech, expressed gratitude for the confidence shown by Ferus Smit, Eekels, and Arklow Shipping. He noted a growing interest among cargo vessel owners for more efficient operations with lower emissions.
