DNV has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to a collaborative consortium consisting of MSC, Zhoushan Changhong International, and CIMC ORIC for their innovative design of a 21,700 TEU ultra-large container ship powered by ammonia.
This development marks a significant step forward in crafting next-generation container ships with a zero-carbon footprint.

The proposed vessel will feature cutting-edge ammonia dual-fuel engines alongside large C-type ammonia storage tanks. Enhanced features, such as a vertical bow, streamlined stern, and hull lines, coupled with low-resistance coatings and energy-efficient propellers, are set to augment fuel efficiency.
Extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and model tests have validated these enhancements.

DNV’s experts have meticulously assessed the design concept, ensuring compliance with both DNV and international standards. This includes ammonia fuel systems, propulsion arrangements, and safety protocols. The AiP paves the way for further engineering studies and potential commercial construction in accordance with DNV class rules.

Future development and design framework
Optimized to hold a high load-to-capacity ratio and enhanced hold utilisation, the vessel design includes a twin-island deck and extended foredeck, allowing for additional 40 ft container bays while maintaining operational effectiveness.
Moving forward, the consortium plans to delve deeper into safety study analyses, integrating ammonia handling processes, and refining the vessel's fuel system. An Approval in Principle (AiP) serves as an independent assessment of a concept within a set framework of requirements, confirming the design’s viability without significant technical hindrances.
