ABS has introduced a web-based training module designed to boost safety awareness among commercial fishermen, culminating a four-year initiative.
The program focuses on six core safety risk categories related to the dynamic stability of fishing vessels and utilises computational fluid dynamics alongside advanced rendering techniques to ensure realistic simulations.

Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “This work shows the unwavering efforts of ABS to promote the security of life at sea. In some environmental conditions, commercial fishing can become an occupation with many risks.”
By leveraging modern simulation technologies, ABS aims to enhance situational awareness and safety risk understanding, thereby supporting professionals in the fishing sector.

The project received financial backing from the Commercial Fishing Occupational Safety Research program, under the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The project was a collaborative endeavour involving ABS, AMSEA, George Mason University, and the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety (NEC), with additional input from Hockema Group, Inc.
Interactive training tool
Joseph D. Myers, U.S. Coast Guard Fishing Vessel Safety Program Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the tool's launch. He said, "We are excited to see this stability training tool come online! The interactive features permit the user to experiment with multiple stability-oriented scenarios; and in doing so, permit knowledge-based decision making on probable outcomes, which may enhance valuable stability decisions while at sea."
