Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has achieved a significant milestone with the acquisition of a Product Design Assessment (PDA) certificate from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its innovative condition-based maintenance system, SCBM.
The system has been acknowledged with a SMART (MHM) Tier 2 PDA, verifying its adherence to the functional and system specifications outlined in the ABS Guide for Smart Functions for Marine Vessels and Offshore Units.
Compliance with ABS standards
This certification underscores SCBM's alignment with ABS's rigorous standards for next-generation technologies. It showcases SHI's commitment to enhancing maritime operations through methods including structural and machinery health monitoring, asset efficiency, and operational performance.
Designed for real-time data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) analysis, SCBM is a smart ship solution that offers anomaly detection and machinery diagnostics to support condition-based maintenance and enhance awareness of machinery health.
Adoption of smart technologies at sea
The achievement of this Tier 2 PDA is a component of a broader JDP with SHI
The achievement of this Tier 2 PDA is a component of a broader joint development project (JDP) with SHI, intended to bolster machinery health and safety through smart ship innovations.
"This PDA is the latest achievement in a larger joint development project (JDP)with SHI to support enhanced machinery health and safety through smart ship technologies," stated Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.
He adds, "As a pioneer in supporting the adoption of smart technologies at sea, ABS is proud to work with forward-looking companies like SHI to help develop practical applications for these technologies with a focus on safer operations."
Future prospects with enhanced data analysis
Dong Yeon Lee, Executive Vice President of SHI's Ship & Offshore Research Institute, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration, stating: "We're very pleased to work with ABS and thankful for the expertise involved to get the SMART (MHM) Tier 2 PDA, which is the first milestone in the JDP with ABS for product certification of smart ship solutions."
Following the receipt of a SMART (MHM) Tier 2 AiP in October 2023, SHI has been applying and validating various data analysis and AI models to meet the PDA requirements.
Dong Yeon Lee added, "Through this PDA acquisition, we expect to provide enhanced machinery health monitoring and diagnosis based on real-time data analysis and AI analysis for a vessel’s machinery in terms of safer operation and management. SHI looks forward to providing the most beneficial solution to reduce operational costs to our clients."
