Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has received an approval in principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its innovative SnapWind Float. This semi-submersible-type floating offshore wind design is intended to support the next generation of 15MW offshore wind turbines. The SnapWind Float employs a passive ballast system along with optimised mooring lines to maintain stability in challenging offshore environments and to reduce operational risks.
Innovative Offshore Wind Design
The SnapWind Float's design is geared towards the efficient development of floating offshore wind farms, particularly in regions where skilled labour, heavy lifting equipment, and workspace are limited. ABS has meticulously reviewed the design, ensuring it meets both class and industry standards.
Floating Offshore Wind Platforms
Floating offshore wind platforms offer substantial potential for renewable energy development globally. Highlighting ABS's commitment to this sector, Miguel Hernandez, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Offshore, stated, "Floating offshore wind platforms represent a significant opportunity in renewable offshore energy development in various parts of the world. ABS is actively at the forefront of this sector, bringing global expertise in certifying and verifying new designs. We are proud to collaborate with industry majors like SHI on innovative solutions that are focused on advancing safety at sea."
SnapWind Float Development
The SnapWind Float has been crafted by integrating SHI’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) expertise with cutting-edge design. According to Hae-Ki Jang, SHI’s Chief Technology Officer, "The SnapWind Float, which obtained AIP from ABS, is a next-generation solution developed by combining SHI’s EPC capabilities with innovative design. Moreover, it addresses both technical and commercial challenges faced by offshore wind developers seeking efficient and commercially viable solutions."
With a rich heritage of more than 70 years in offshore expertise and innovation, ABS offers top-tier offshore services, focusing on the evaluation and assurance of new and advancing solutions. These efforts aim to ensure the safe management of assets within offshore operations.
